My colleague Dr. Jessica Chen and I wrote this peer-reviewed article, which was published in February 2024 in The Lancet – Regional Health Americas. The article reviews prior literature by disability studies and disability justice scholars and researchers studying social and structural determinants of health to identify a definition of structural ableism tailored for public health and healthcare research. It also proposes pathways through which structural ableism may influence health and a series of principles relevant to studying structural ableism in health systems. The broader goal of the article is to inspire dialogue about why structural ableism has been ignored in the public health and health services literature and the ways that these fields have been complicit in perpetuating and legitimizing ableism.
